An underappreciated masterpiece about faith and science.
Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Fight Club (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.30
As speculation about existence, this puts "Matrix" to shame, which is why I don't include it in this list.
The Big Lebowski - 10th Anniversary Limited EditionThe Big Lebowski - 10th Anniversary Limited Edition
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $20.09
Neo-neo-noir. Just about as perfect a film as the Coens have ever produced. One plea: Give us a sequel!
Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.28
Of all the "non-linear" films of the 1990s, this is the best. "Memento" was an elaboration but not an improvement upon the style.
Fargo (Special Edition)Fargo (Special Edition)

I love the Coens. So sue me.
Ed Wood (Special Edition)Ed Wood (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.99
This really is one of the best "film-in-a-film films and if Marty Landau didn't deserve the Oscar, nobody ever deserved it. Tim Burton is a national treasure. Period.
Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition)Schindler's List (Widescreen Edition)

I watched it once. I'm not sure if I can ever watch it again. It is that powerul. Nobody can claim that Spielberg isnt' a serious artist.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Criterion CollectionFear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Criterion Collection

They say Terry Gilliam never did drugs. Uh, okay. If that is really true, then this is the most amazaing directorial effort ever. And Johnny Depp created his all-time most memorable character, Capt'n Jack notwithstanding.
Gattaca (Special Edition)Gattaca (Special Edition)

Another neo-neo-noir, but with a very different ambiance than "Fear and Loathing." The cast and performances here are superb. My pal John Hartzog once asked me, "What is this film about?" My answer: The irresistable nature of the human spirit.
The Shawshank Redemption (Single Disc Edition)The Shawshank Redemption (Single Disc Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $5.19
Stephen King is the master storyteller of our age. While not the best film based on his work, this was the best film of his work released in the 1990s and therefore deserves notice.
Edward Scissorhands (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)Edward Scissorhands (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.51
Like I said, Tim Burton is a national treasure. Johnny Depp is a national treasure. But Vincent Price? He ought to be on Mount Rushmore. Thank you, Tim Burton, for giving fans of Mr. Price one more opportunity to appreciate his gentle genius.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day [Blu-ray]Terminator 2: Judgment Day [Blu-ray]

Well, James Cameron would HAVE to be on any list of films from the 1990s and I liked this one better than "Titanic." Even with Schwarzenegger, the film was better (I do prefer DiCaprio).
Reservoir Dogs (15th Anniversary)Reservoir Dogs (15th Anniversary)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.93
No other American film in the 1990s had the same impact as "Reservoir Dogs," except maybe "Fight Club." Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Acting still counts. For an example of ACTING, see "Magnolia."
Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition)Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition)

And finally, nobody can begrudge me this film, which is fun, educational, exciting, and makes me proud to be an American, g-ddammit. Also, since I didn't want to add "Forest Gump," but did want to honor Tom Hanks, this was my choice.
