![]() | PlayStation 2 Console - Black
Buy new: $129.99 / Used from: $79.95 If this list was based only on games made originally for the system, then the PS2 would take number one. This is the only system that has excelled in every genre across the board: RPGs, action, adventure, fighting, racing, shooters, strategy - the PS2 has numerous classics in all of them. Best titles: Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy X, Dragon Quest VIII.

![]() | Super Nintendo NES System - Video Game Console
Buy used from: $44.00 Again, if this list was based on original games only, the SNES would be higher than Wii. Like the PS2, the Super Nintendo had by far the broadest and greatest game library of its generation (as well as most other generations). Best titles: Super Mario World, Zelda: Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger.

![]() | PSone System - Video Game Console
Buy used from: $32.95 Don't forget about the original PlayStation. This was the first juggernaut RPG system with the likes of Xenogears, Final Fantasy VII through IX, Chrono Cross, Grandia, and many more. Not only that - you can also play some of the best SNES RPGs such as FFIV through VI and Chrono Trigger. PSone also featured several action classics including Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

![]() | Gamecube Console Platinum
Buy used from: $24.95 It was very close between N64 and GameCube, but I gave the slight edge to N64. GameCube was the more versatile system, though. It introduced one of the greatest action games of all time, Resident Evil 4, before it was available on PS2 or Wii. It had the usual dose of Mario, Zelda and Metroid, which did not disappoint (although they were not quite as spectacular as with other Nintendo consoles).

![]() | Nintendo NES System - Video Game Console
Buy used from: $23.00 The original Nintendo is certainly primitive and inferior when compared to the other Nintendo consoles, but it was also a versatile console for its time, and I'd still take it over several more advanced consoles (such as Dreamcast and X-Box 360). It introduced many of the leading game series which are still going strong today such as Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Warrior.

![]() | Genesis 16 Bit Video Entertainment System
Buy used from: $20.84 The Genesis was surprisingly competitive with the SNES despite having a clearly inferior game library. It is one of the best systems for fighting games due to the shape and layout of the controller. The best game on the system by far is Sonic 3 & Knuckles (created by inserting your Sonic 3 cart into the Sonic & Knuckles cart). It also had good RPG series such as Phantasy Star and Shining Force.

![]() | Xbox 360 Elite Bundle
Buy used from: $289.99 The X-Box 360 is one of the most feature-packed systems ever built. X-Box Live remains the smoothest gamer community, and this console has finally developed a solid library with a few classic games in the mix such as Gears of War, Fable II, and Ninja Gaiden II. Plus, the X-Box Live Arcade is an excellent window to the past.
