Heading the list of features we love is the great miter detent override, allowing you to compensate for a world that just isn’t square all the time. Normally, you’d have a fight on your hands with regular detents because of that annoying tendency saws have to snap into the detent when you get too close. But built into the cam lock miter handle is a detent override, and you can cut as close to a detent as you need to without slipping in. It miters from 0 to 50 degrees both right and left, and of course, there are the 11 positive stops you expect, and all dead-on accurate. The cam lever is a great improvement over the turnscrew knob on the miter arm, too.
The tall sliding fence has a machined support that promises nothing but the ultimate accuracy. We like the extra height because it supports crown molding beautifully, even up to 6-5/8 inches nested and base molding up to 6-1/2 inches vertically. Need a bevel cut? The fence slides neatly out of the way for bevels, anywhere from 0 to 48 degrees both left and right. (If you’re in the market for this much power but just a single bevel, check out the DeWalt 715 saw. If you want all this, a bag of chips and a slider, step up to the DW718.) There are absolutely no complaints from this motor no matter what you’re cross-cutting, as it’s drawing a beefy 15 amps and has a max rpm of 3,600, slicing through 2-by oak like it’s paper. What we found impressive is the saw’s ability to crosscut a 2-by-10 just by adding an auxiliary base to bring the stock up to level with the back fence.
If portability is a factor, there are few saws that rival this one, we think: It’s just 44 pounds despite its brawny power, and a smart designer incorporated easy-on-the-body handles into the base that offer a nice, wide, secure grip. Though it’s well-enough suited to the home workshop, this saw is at home at the jobsite.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
From the Manufacturer
The DW716 is powered by a 15Amp motor and comes equipped with a 12 carbide blade which spins at 3,600 rpm. The extra tall fences and double bevel feature deliver unmatched performance. The DW716 incorporates an adjustable stainless steel miter detent plate with 11 positive stops for the most common miter cuts. The cam lock miter handle eliminates the need to twist the miter handle to lock in on the miter angle and delivers a quick and solid miter lock. The saw features a miter detent override which allows the user to override the miter stops and adjust to the miter setting desired without the saw slipping into the miter detents while the new precise miter system delivers more repeatable and accurate miter angles. The innovative machined base fence design delivers long term fence straightness by providing additional support to the fence. The DW716 delivers the capacity to cut up to 6-1/2 base molding against the fence when mitered to the left or right and delivers up to a 2 x 10 crosscut with the innovative back fence design. The DW716 is designed to accept the DW7187 DEWALT Adjustable Miter Saw Laser System (SOLD SEPERATELY, NOT INCLUDED) which delivers visibility to the cut path. The saw can be beveled to the left 0? - 48? and to the right 0? - 48? with positive stops at 0?, 45? and 33.9? for cutting crown molding laying flat. Weighing in at 44lbs and equipped with comfortable side handles in the base, the DW716 is designed to be extremely portable. The DW716 includes a carbide blade, blade wrench and dust bag
Customer Reviews
awesome cuts!
I got this saw for about $370 (free ship) +free palm sander....great deal and both tools are great. For the novice user, you can save $ by buying a "non-compound" saw since crown molding can be cut in a vertical position without compound cut. Wish someone told me, could have saved more, but it's awesome if you need the feature.
dewalt saw
Nice saw - so far so good, I hope it last as long as my single bevel chop saw...
Great saw even for a non-professional
Even though I was just using this to put a floor in my sunroom (and don't have much skill with power tools or carpentry), I thought the saw was easy to use, safe, and accurate. I found it worthwhile to buy a good quality saw, as it appears the Dewalt will continue to perform for many years to come.
