The dual band N technology in the DWA-160 supports selectable 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless signals. This allows you to check e-mail and browse the Internet using the 2.4GHz band or stream HD movies and other media on the 5GHz band. The 5GHz wireless band is the best technology available for wirelessly streaming HD videos across your network. It achieves this by operating in a clear wireless band to help avoid interference that may slow down and limit the range of current wireless technologies like 802.11g*. The DWA-160 is also backward compatible to 802.11g, which means it can be used in existing 802.11g networks.
The D-Link Xtreme N Dual Band USB Adapter DWA-160 is the latest addition to the award-winning Xtreme N product family. The DWA-160 is designed for users looking to get a reliable wireless connection that can handle High-Definition (HD) video streams throughout the house. This is achieved by using the DWA-160 together with a draft 802.11n dual band router (D-Link DIR-855 or DGL-4500 recommended).

Horrible Product
I brought this adaptor in October and it has been nothing but garbage. I literaly have my router (DIR-855) in next room about 20' away I live in a two bedroom ranch one level and I hardly get signal above 50% (mostly 20 - 30%) on 2.4ghz and 5% or less on 5ghz band. I constantly get disconnected from router because of signal loss. The adaptor just up and died yesterday. I got to admit I have tried Linksys (WRT-610) and D-Link (DIR-855) dual band routers and their performance is highly overrated. I am a proficent pc user/tech. They need to go back to the drawing board and redesign. Save your money if you want a good router get the D-Link (DGL-4500) not a true dual band but works well (had 100 - 98% signal) I had one and returned it figuring it would be great,(not) so I got this pile of heaping garbage. I brought both items here thru Amazon big mistake I am stuck with this garbage and out alot of money. I will be returning the adaptor for a new one to replace dead one.

Not up to my expectations
I have upgraded my network to the N draft standard and all of my components are d-link. I am very happy with their performance - I have a dir-655 router, Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter for my PC and a Xtreme N Duo High-Definition MediaBridge for my devices in the media center (PS3, DVR, etc). (I switched from previously using linksys N products which had terrible performance.) I purchased the DWA-160 USB adapter for my laptop and it is a huge disappointment. The reception and performance are lousy. Even when I place my laptop 10 feet away from my d-link DIR-655 router, I only get 3 bars and file copies or media downloads are much slower then on my PC that is 3 times farther in a different room. I would recommend not purchasing this device.
D-Link DWA -160 Review...
The D-Link DWA-160 isn't really a bad product, however, the range is terrible. I use it about 20 feet from my wireless router and I can barely get 3 bars. the sad part is, the wireless router is also a top of the line D-link router (DGL-4500). All I can say is that it works but, keep in mind, if your using it further than 20 feet and you don't have a range booster, you may not get max performance.
