Customer Reviews
Stable & fast.
My last N-router was not terribly stable. Speed was unpredictable (even when plugged in directly with ethernet cable). The SMC has been awesome by comparison. I've had it running for months & haven't had to reset it and the wireless connections to 2 other PC's in the house stay up without issues as well. I'll definitely buy SMC again.
Awesome Router! It's a rebranded D-Link DGL-4500
This is an incredibly powerful router, packing processing power that pulls no punches.
The wireless-n is *truly* wireless-n. I was enjoying sustained transfer speeds of about 7,000 KB/s from 40 feet away, through floors and walls.
It is feature rich, highly configurable, and very powerful - easily handling multiple packet streams, torrents and P2P traffic.
One thing to keep in mind is that this unit is a rebranded D-Link DGL-4500 Gamer's Lounge Extreme Dual-Band, which you can find on Amazon.com. It comes in at about six or seven dollars cheaper than the D-Link - but if you are thinking of getting this router and are in the mood for something a little "flashier", then you may want to consider the D-Link.
Wireless "n" Oversold??
I purchased SMC SMCWGBR14-N Barricade N ProMax Draft 11n Wireless Gigabit Broadband Router this product on the basis of good reviews versus other wireless n offerings. It has been widely suggested that the wireless n draft standard will increase home office range over that provided by older revision g products.
Yes, the setup was quite straightforward as attested by other reviewers and the customer service was satisfactory.
Unfortunately, my experience has been that the number of bars (signal strength) achieved two rooms away from this wireless n router with a wireless connection to a Vista system is two bars (marginal signal strength) versus the five bars (excellent signal strength) consistantly shown on my older g version wireless router.
I tried moving the wireless n router to other positions and orientations to see if the signal capture in the test room would improve but it remained marginal at two bars.
Don't know if the problem is router related or n-version related but since range and not speed is the issue for me, I do not find the unit to be an improvement over what I have already installed.
