![]() | Mountain House Chili Mac w/ Beef - Serves 2 - Serves 2
Buy new: $5.69 Even if you plan on getting a meal somewhere else, these are lightweight and easy to prepare. They can serve as a just-in-case meal. My girlfriend and I both like the chili mac with beef, though I also like the beef stroganoff. This is a 2-serving pack.
![]() | aPack Self-Heating Emergency MRE Meals (12 Pack)
If you are really lazy or tired (for example, if it took you an extra two hours to get to camp), having an MRE available is nice. I've had one sit at the bottom of my saddle bags for a couple trips before being eaten. After a full day, I was glad I didn't have to do anything to prepare a meal. Nothing to wash afterwards.
![]() | Stainless Steel Sierra Cup, Camping Cup
Buy new: $5.99 You'll need something for your food. I use sierra cups. The larger ones are nice because they fit a genuine serving. The smaller ones pack a little easier, but then you'll be eating half a meal at a time.
![]() | MSR Dragonfly Stove
Buy new: $99.99 This is a great backpacking stove. What makes it fun for moto-camping is its ability to burn gasoline. Now you can run out of gas either by missing the turnout for the gas station or simply trying to make your girlfriend some hot chocolate. Not really. 32 oz of gasoline can mean an extra 10 miles, or more than a whole week of cooking.
![]() | MSR Fuel Bottle 33 oz
Buy new: $14.95 Fuel goes here. The 11 oz bottles are nice for a weekend camping trip. They are also nice and small. However, if you are willing to install some external holders, a couple 33 oz bottles can be nice. They alternatively extend your bike range or cook your meals. If you pack both white gas and gasoline, make sure you label which is which. Your bike cares.
![]() | Garrity Power Lite 3 LED Crank Light (Titanium Silver/Black)
Buy new: $9.54 / Used from: $7.99 These hand crank flashlights are convenient in any vehicle emergency kit. They illuminate well, and a minute of cranking lasts quite a while. I bring two when camping with my girlfriend. Nobody likes being left at camp alone without a light while you are out looking for the restroom.
![]() | STANSPORT OUTDOOR 10 Oz Cinsa Blue Enamel Coffee Mug
Buy new: $3.14 Something for hot chocolate is nice. Seriously, my girlfriend considers it an essential. That and s'mores.
![]() | Texsport Knollwood Bivy Shelter Tent
Buy new: $32.40 Sleep here. When choosing a tent, you want to get something that can fit you and your gear. That probably means getting a small 3 person tent for 2 people. I have a tent similar to this one. It's actually held up remarkably well, even in the rain. We use a mylar blanket as ground cover underneath the tent. That helps considerably with the lifetime of a cheap tent.
![]() | "Fire Starters, Non Toxic, 12/Pk"
Buy new: $1.99 For lighting a campfire. Not really a necessity. If your camp store sells firewood, chances are they also sell fire starters. Of course, a fire starter may cost the same as a bundle of wood. Then again, a bundle of wood does you no good if you can't get it to light. My favorites are the mini duraflame logs. Those can light a decent campfire in the rain. These have worked for me. Bring extra.
![]() | Zippo Lighter Black Matte w/ Zippo Logo
Buy new: $14.21 Lighters can be much more convenient than matches. I use one of those long bbq lighters. It's cheap and fits in my tank bag. Matches are free at the local pub, though, and take up almost no space.
![]() | AGSLabs 315 Biodegradable Camp Soap 4 Oz.
Buy new: $2.29 Don't forget to wash your dishes, hands, etc. Feel superior with your biodegradable camp soap. Far superior to people who fill a 4 oz bottle with regular dish soap. By the way, get a standard kitchen sponge and cut it in half - voila, two camping sponges.
![]() | Bens 100 Max DEET Tick & Insect Repellent Spray 1.25 0165-7070
Buy new: $5.39 I've never actually brought bug repellent. Last time I was camping, a group next to us emptied two spray bottles of some kind of insecticide, so your needs may outstrip a small bottle. If the bugs get too bad, stay inside your gear. My sister has a sunscreen bug repellent she uses backpacking. It sounded like a good idea, so I bought some last weekend.
![]() | Coleman Trail First Aid Kit
Buy new: $6.99 I have a first aid kit. All of the ready-made kits are kind of a joke, though. A good start with no follow through. I'm guessing individual needs differ enough that it's not economical to make a complete product. Start with something like this. Small and cheap.
![]() | Tums Antacid/Calcium Supplement, Maximum Strength, Assorted Fruit, Tablets, Value Size 160 tablets (Pack of 2)
Add a roll of tums to your first aid kit. You'll probably have 2 tums in your kit. That's good for one person. Sucks if you both have indigestion.
![]() | Imodium A-D Anti-Diarrhea, 72-Count Caplets
Buy new: $15.21 Add a single sheet of Anti-Diarrhea pills (9? 12? Doesn't matter). Nothing takes the fun out of a motorcycle camping trip like the runs. This goes in every motorcycle first aid kit.
![]() | Celox
Buy new: $13.95 Yeah, I have one of these in my motorcycle first aid kit. There's a video on youtube of them using this to stop a femural artery bleed. It's probably not going to go into your first aid kit, but it's just so darn cool that I had to add it to my list.
![]() | Instant Cold Compress (sold in quantity of 5)
Buy new: $6.95 Add two of these to your first aid kit. This not only is useful for treating swelling, but there are times when it's just too darn hot in your motorcycle gear. Overheating can be a serious concern. Keep hydrated, and don't be afraid to use a cold pack. They're cheap and easy to replace.
![]() | Heatmax Hot Hands 2 Handwarmer (40 pairs)
Buy new: $33.65 Maybe I just ride in consistently bad weather, but I always bring a couple of these. I have heated grips, but my passenger does not. It's amazing what warm hands can do for passenger morale.
![]() | MSR Packtowl Personal Towels
Buy new: $11.66 - $29.66 Those super-chamois that you see on TV make excellent camping towels. I use those. One of my riding buddies has something like this. Useful for drying hands, dishes, and most things that get wet. Also serves as a small tablecloth for setting stuff down.
![]() | Coleman Camper's Utensil Set
Buy new: $7.90 These things are cheap (quality-wise), but they pack well. You need something to eat with.
![]() | Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Fast & Light Mattress
Buy new: $75.08 - $109.95 These not only act as padding, but they act as an insulator layer between your body and the cold ground. They also sell chair systems that use these pads. Get one that is the right size for you. I prefer to have my whole body on the pad. My father gets one that is just big enough for his back, leaving his legs on the ground (his is significantly easier to pack).
![]() | Wenzel Omega II/Great Falls Mummy 0-Degree Sleeping Bag with Hood (Blue, Black Charcoal, Berry)
Buy new: $41.20 Get a sleeping bag that's warm, but packs down small. I prefer fiberfill to down only because I have a cheap tent and plan on getting wet.
![]() | Texsport Fleece Black Sleeping Bag
Buy new: $12.66 This is *not* a sleeping bag, whatever the product says. It is a butt-pad, a blanket for use by the campfire, and an extra blanket for use on top of your real sleeping bag when it gets cold. For all those things, it is quite effective. It's really not effective as a sleeping bag. You could get a fleece blanket instead.
![]() | EMERGENCY/SURVIVAL BLANKET
Buy new: $5.30 I bring two mylar blankets with me. They don't take up a lot of room at all. One serves as ground cover, under the tent. This keeps the bottom of the tent dry and relatively clean. It lasts about 4 or 5 camping trips on average. It's cheap insurance for a cheap tent. They also have emergency sleeping bags, but those don't make good ground covers.
![]() | Coleman Emergency Poncho
Buy new: $4.95 Emergency ponchos are great when the weather turns foul and you planned on sunnier times. Also convenient insurance for the packing size.
![]() | Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix, Milk Chocolate Value Pack, 16-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 8)
If you forget the hot chocolate (or the s'mores), you're going to have to ride out to the nearest store to purchase it. That's just a fact.
![]() | Coleman Tent Kit
Buy new: $9.84 Leave the broom and dust tray at home. The tool that looks like it is supposed to aid the removal of the stakes is actually a device designed to break the plastic heads off the stakes. Leave that as well. Instead, use the mallet to hit the stakes side to side to loosen them, and pull them out of the ground with your hand. Your tent probably comes with very thin stakes. These won't bend as much.
![]() | Coleman Camp Axe
Buy new: $14.98 You can use this to drive your tent stakes into the ground instead of bringing a mallet. You can pretend that you're going to chop wood, but that's rarely a necessity. But go on and get it anyway. It makes you feel manly to use an axe as a hammer, even if it is totally awkward to do so.
![]() | Leatherman 830032 Blast Multitool with Leather Sheath
Buy new: $38.50 / Used from: $47.92 I carry two leatherman tools in my bike. Every once in a while it is nice to have two pliers. Most of the time, one will do. I've used pretty much every stupid tool on my leatherman at least once while moto-camping.
![]() | Ziploc Double Zipper Quart Freezer Bags, 216 Bags
Buy new: $15.46 I bring a variety of ziploc bags with me. That mylar blanket is never going to be as small as it was before you used it. That poncho? Same thing. The camp towel will get stuff wet without ziploc. A couple gallon bags and 5 quart bags per trip end up getting used in various ways.
![]() | Zip Ties, Cable Ties
Buy new: $1.39 Everyone knows they need zip ties. It's probably more important than duct tape on a bike. The power cable running into my ignition was loose, and would cause all power to be lost on my bike. No horn, no blinkers, no engine. I fixed it with a couple of zip ties. However, my jerry-rigged solution looked far less manly than it could have on account of my zip ties being hot pink and neon green.
![]() | FULLER 130-7822 22-Piece Combo SAE/Metric Long Arm Hex Key Set
Buy new: $11.59 If it's loose, tighten it. Get the tools required to perform emergency maintenance on your bike. For me, that mostly means the two leatherman tools, a set of hex wrenches, the zip ties, and a tire kit.
![]() | Waterproof Playing Cards
Buy new: $7.99 Playing cards are a good way to pass time. These are beer-proof and dew-proof, but don't shuffle as nice as standard cards.
![]() | Pyramid 18 Inch Black Bungee Cord
Buy new: $2.99 Get an appropriate set of bungees, straps, and stuff bags. Your tent, thermarests, and sleeping bags all need to pack as tight as possible, all of which are tough to get as small as the original size.
